Ice Hockey

One of the most celebrated winter sports, Ice Hockey is also one of the fastest and most physical disciplines. The game is one of the most-watched Olympic competitions and matchups, including the 1980 medal event between Russia and United States in Lake Placid. The Lake Placid 2023 World University Games Ice Hockey preliminary round tournaments will be held in Potsdam and Canton, with the playoffs at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.

The Women’s Tournament will have eight teams competing in a round robin to advance four teams to the playoffs. As with the men’s event, each team must have a minimum of 15 players and two goalkeepers, and a maximum of 20 players plus 3 goalkeepers

The Men’s Tournament will have 12 teams, The preliminary round will feature 2 pools of 6 teams each, with the top 2 finishers in each pool advancing to the playoffs.

Cheel Arena At Clarkson

A 3,000-seat multi-purpose arena in Potsdam, New York, Cheel Arena opened in 1991. It’s home to Clarkson University’s Golden Knights Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division 1 hockey.

Olympic Center: Skating Oval

Site of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games, including the legendary “Miracle on Ice,” the Olympic Center features three ice rinks: Herb Brooks Arena, Jack Shea Arena, and the USA Rink. It’s also home to the Lake Placid Olympic Museum.
