More North Country athletes and coaches will participate in the World University Games next month.
Two former SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals are on the U.S. women’s ice hockey team roster. Annie Katonka and Erin McArdle graduated earlier this year.
Former Middlebury College Panther Madeline Leidt and UVM’s Elizabeth Simmons are also on the team. George Frank from Clarkson University was named equipment manager.
Team USA holds the number two seed for women’s ice hockey. They’ll debut against third seed Japan on Thursday, Jan. 12 at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall. Japan beat the U.S. for the bronze medal in 2019.
Paul Smith’s College head Nordic skiing coach Matthew Dougherty was named to the U.S. biathlon team’s coaching staff. The college says seven Paul Smith’s athletes will compete in Alaska later this month for spots on the Biathlon team.
The Games will bring more than 1,400 athletes and their families to the North Country next month. Competition begins Wednesday, Jan. 11.
