The Village of Lake Placid began its downtown renovation project in April 2021. The project included adding new granite sidewalks, creating more pedestrian crosswalks, and improving the stormwater drainage system.

“We have beautiful new sidewalks, they’re much wider, their more walkable, our crosswalks are safer and larger and easier to see,” said Mary Jane Lawrence, the chief operating officer at the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism.

Most of the renovations within downtown Lake Placid were done on Main Street, which will also host different events throughout the FISU games.

“During the World University Games, there is going to be huge festivities every night on Main St. with live music and award ceremonies,” said Lawrence.

However, downtown is not the only area that received some love before the games. The Olympic Regional Development Authority has been working hard to make sure their venues are ready for the games. ice.

Inside the Olympic Center, ORDA updates all three ice rinks and added a museum.

“In a couple of weeks here we’re opening up our museum on Nov. 7 which is really exciting for us, it is the Lake Placid Olympic museum as well as our retail store and Roamer’s Café.”

The clock is now ticking to opening ceremonies on Jan. 12and people all over Lake Placid are ready to welcome back the games for the first time since 1972.
