NEW YORK, N.Y. — The Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games Torch Relay Celebration arrived at New York City’s iconic Rockefeller Center Skating Rink today. The celebration was one of the tour’s 15-stops that culminates in Lake Placid with the FISU Games’ first carbon-free cauldron lighting. The cauldron lighting will open the 31st FISU World University Games Winter Edition on Jan. 12, 2023.
The torch relay celebration, powered by Hydro-Quebec, was welcomed by torchbearers including skaters from Figure Skating in Harlem, who will perform during the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games’ figure skating Exhibition Gala on Jan. 16. The celebration was also an opportunity to unveil the Games’ medal ceremonial Jacket, which will be worn by medal presenters during each of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games’ 85 medal ceremonies. Designed by students from New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology and produced by Karbon, with an emphasis on sustainability through durability, the jackets are manufactured incorporating recycled fabrics and insulation.
The Jan. 12-22 Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games will bring together 1,443 collegiate-athletes, ages 17-25, from more than 540 universities in 46 countries, to participate in Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, freestyle and freeski, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, snowboarding, ski jumping and speed skating. The 12 winter sports will be contested throughout northern New York, including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Wilmington, North Creek, Canton and Potsdam.
