LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Excitement continues to build ahead of Thursday’s, Jan. 12, Opening Ceremony for the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games. Athletes and delegates from 46 nations have begun arriving to the two-time Olympic village, nestled in upstate New York.
Yesterday, 85 collegiate-athletes from the Republic of Korea arrived for team processing for the 11-day multi-winter sports and educational festival. Today, 150 athletes from the United States, 139 athletes from Japan, 121 athletes representing Canada and 58 athletes from Ukraine arrived at Lake Placid’s Olympic Center to begin the accreditation process.
The FISU World University Games are the largest multi-sporting event for collegiate-athletes between the ages of 17-25. The Jan. 12-22 Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games will bring together 1,443 athletes from 46 nations and more than 540 universities to participate in Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, freestyle and free ski, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, short track speed skating, snowboarding, ski jumping, and speed skating. A total of 86 competitions in 12 winter sports will take place on venues spread throughout the North Country, including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Wilmington, North Creek, Canton and Potsdam.
On Thursday evening, at 7 p.m., these athletes will gather in Lake Placid’s Olympic Center to be a part of the Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games’ Opening Ceremony. The Games will officially open with the lighting of the cauldron that will house the symbolic flame in the historic Brewster Park.
The approximately 12-foot-high cauldron, designed and created by Adirondack Studios of Argyle, N.Y., will utilize LED lights in a first-of-its-kind carbon-free presentation. Built from carbon steel, the top borders depict the silhouettes of the High Peaks. The one-of-a-kind cauldron is ribboned with winter sports pictogram cutouts, allowing light from an intense LED-powered strobe at the core to shine through.
Tickets for the Opening Ceremony are still available and are $45.
